On Wednesday 17 June, St Botolph’s Day, the annual Beating of the Bounds came once again to the Hall. This was led by the Master of Aldersgate Ward Club, Phillipa White, who along with nearly 30 of the Club arrived on a very hot day into our garden. Great care was taken as they stepped onto the grass which now looks delightfully like a meadow. Care was definitely needed as over the weekend both wild Pyramid and Bee orchids had appeared.
Beating of the bounds is a centuries-old tradition which used to remind villagers where the important boundaries in their lives were. Today, this still takes place across the country and especially in London, exercised by many Ward Clubs and Liveries.
Later that day, the City of London sent in a small team that continued to remove invasive species from the garden. For anyone passing, we hope you will see how good the garden is looking with many wild flowers and, of course, our beehive in the southern end.
