The Master and the Deputy Master were recently invited to the Freedom Ceremony at the Guildhall of Liveryman Claire Gapper and what a joy it was. How we have missed these delightful ceremonies conducted by the Clerk of the Chamberlain’s Court, Murray Craig. As usual, Murray made the event very special and personal to Claire and after presenting her with her Freedom Certificate, written by the Court Calligrapher on sheepskin parchment and with the Rules for the Conduct of Life, he extended his right hand of fellowship and greeted her as a new Freeman and a citizen of London.
To become a Freeman of the City of London is very special and a very ancient tradition, going back to the 13th Century. In medieval times, it gave the recipient the right to trade in the City.
I know Clare thoroughly enjoyed the occasion as the photographs demonstrate. For those of you who have been waiting for the return of the live ceremonies, they are back but there is a backlog, so contact the Chamberlain’s Office and get your applications in.
