The Plaisterers made a visit to the January meeting of the Court of the Common Council, the ruling body of the City of London Corporation. The Master, Alderman Alison Gowman, is an elected member of the Court and facilitated the visit by hosting a lunch and pre-meeting briefing. The actual Court meeting takes place in the grand surroundings of the Great Hall in Guildhall – the medieval centre of the historic City. The Lord Mayor of London presides at the meeting and attends dressed formally in robes and chain with the Sword Bearer and Common Cryer. Whilst this is an ancient ritual, the business of the meeting was very current and included questions querying the making of the first 24/7 zero emission street in London and a plea to plant more trees in the City. Reports were agreed about the provision of hospitality, funding of two projects and the funding of fire door replacement programmes.
The meetings are open to the public and provide an interesting insight into the workings of the City Corporation. More information is on the City of London website http://democracy.cityoflondon.gov.uk/mgCommitteeDetails.aspx?ID=223
