The Master, Alison Gowman, and Past Master Terry Wright visited the Worldskills UK Live competition at Birmingham NEC on Friday 22 November in the midst of the Worldskills UK Live competition. Plastering and Plastering and Drywall Systems were just two of the many skills that formed the competition across seven of the exhibition halls. Alongside the competitors there were thousands of visiting young students who were able to view the skills and have the great advantage of seeing and trying out possible careers for their futures. The plastering competitions were quickly explained by the current and new training managers for the UK Team. The outgoing manager is Liveryman David Kehoe who has been an excellent mentor over several years and he is now passing this role to Colin McCaughey. Both are seen pictured with the Master on site at the competition. The competition relies on the sponsorship of British Gypsum who are able to provide materials and assistance to the competitors. These apprentices come from all over the UK and it is clear how dedicated they are to creating a perfect finished model with expert care and precision. The winner of the plastering competition was Raymond Stirling from the City of Glasgow College and for the Drywall Systems it was Brendan Duddy from North West Regional College in Northern Ireland. Both our Master and Past Master spent a happy day meeting old friends and learning more about the many skills on show that ranged from mechatronics to beauty therapy.
